Qbox Joins Instaclustr, Plans March 31, 2023, Sunset Date. Read about it in our blog post here.

New capabilities, new clouds available, new technologies available, as Qbox joins forces with Instaclustr.

The team at Qbox and I are excited to share with you that after 9 years as an Elasticsearch Managed Services Provider, we have decided to join forces with Instaclustr, the Redwood City, CA-based managed provider for open source technologies.

The link to the press release is here, but first off, I’d like to take a moment to thank each and every user for helping us get to this point. Some of you have been with us for years, and we’d like to give you full visibility into the details of this move, why this was a great decision, and how this will positively impact you in the future.

First things first: Neither the Qbox team nor the Qbox platform will be going anywhere any time soon. Your clusters are unaffected, and they will remain so unless and until you choose to migrate to Instaclustr’s platform. We’ll get to that shortly. There is, however, a likelihood that there will be a sunset date at some point in the future, but it will not be in calendar year 2022.

Why Now and Why Instaclustr?

Some time ago, the team at Qbox formulated our roadmap of all the improvements we wanted to make to our platform, and we started chipping away at it. But we were dissatisfied with the pace of our innovation, especially when you consider that some of the largest companies on Earth were each dedicating billions of dollars and thousands of people to the problem. (Some day, I will probably memorialize these challenges in full detail, but that will have to wait.)

When I first connected with Peter Lilley, Instaclustr’s CEO, I noticed that not only had they already accomplished much of what we had on the roadmap, they were doing it with elegant interfaces, with the same tech stack that we were using, with dozens more people across the globe, with great venture partners, and with solid technology leadership.

Instaclustr’s momentum was showing in their revenue numbers, industry recognition, and rapidly growing set of customer logos. However, with deep roots in Apache Cassandra, their journey with Elasticsearch was still in the early stages. Peter and I recognized that we could deliver much of our roadmap to our customers immediately while we could help Instaclustr deepen their Search Technologies bench. So, our two companies forged a deal.

Consider the benefits of the Instaclustr platform:

  • Multiple Open Source Technologies. On the Instaclustr platform, our customers can not only run Elasticsearch workloads, but we will also be able to offer Apache Cassandra, Apache Kafka, Redis, PostgreSQL, Apache Zookeeper, and Cadence.
  • OpenSearch and Apache2. For those companies that fully embrace Open Source, as defined by the Open Source Initiative, we can offer OpenSearch, a fully backward compatible fork of Elasticsearch.
  • Multiple Cloud Options. Our team was beta testing our expansion to Azure with some large customers, but Instaclustr has been on Azure for years, with deep expertise. And it’s not just Azure. You can deploy your instances to Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, DigitalOcean, or Vault Cloud as well.
  • Private On-Prem Options. This feature, too, was being beta tested by some of our large customers, but Instaclustr already has this feature.
  • Security and Compliance. Instaclustr already has many of the certifications that we were in the process of obtaining, including SOC2 and PCI.

Reassurances and Opportunities

  • Qbox users will not be required to migrate to Instaclustr, though you are encouraged to do so. This is the only way to gain those capabilities.
  • The Qbox team will become Instaclustr employees, but we will still be operating the Qbox platform in parallel at least until the end of 2022.
  • We have wide latitude to ensure that customers who migrate to Instaclustr will not be facing any pricing increases. What’s not to like about more capabilities for the same price?
  • We can mobilize pre-sales and support personnel to help you with your migration.

Above all, our gratitude and commitment to our customers remains unchanged. As always, you can reach out to me directly by emailing mark [at] qbox.io.
